Welcome to the Bear Den

Third Grade
    or 8-9 Yrs

Den Leader
    Mike Mackey
Our Goals   In the Bear Den, there are four general achievement groups: God, Country, Family, and Self. There are 120 achievement tasks and your Bear Cub must earn a certain number of achievements in each of the four groups to earn his Bear Badge.  This is the year your son will grow in amazing ways. After earning their Bear Badge, the scout may earn arrow points by completing additional achievement tasks.

Summary Much of the advancement for the Bear rank is done by the scout with his family outside of the den.  The parent signs off in the scout's handbook and the Den Leader records the advancements from the handbook in our tracking Software.  The Bear program relies heavily on family involvement, but you will see this gradually change with the scout doing more with his den and more individual direction as he graduates to Webelos.

Ready to join? Then you probably have some questions. Email the Den Leader at the link above and leave your phone number and we will get back with you as soon as possible.

What the Bears are "Doing"...

  • April 6th Den meeting and Reminders
We have our den Monday April 6th.  We are doing a Model Rocket build, and will launch them at a later date.   The for the rockets and 2 engines the cost is $10.  I will have rockets and all that is needed to assemble them for launch.  We will set a launch date later in the week.  Tomorrow will be cover the parts of the rocket, and build the rockets.   The boys will be able to paint and decorate at home.

April 11th - Also, we have our last Bear requirement on Saturday April 11th.   It will be at Salato Wildlife Center, an cover Achievement 5. at 10am.  (Salato Wildlife Center, 1 Sportsman's Lane, Frankfort, KY 40601)

IMPORTANT ACTION  After the April 11th meeting, we will have covered everything to achieve the bear badge.  If your son missed a meeting, they will need to work at home with the family to complete the achievement and let me know it has been completed.   I will have handouts with me to show the current progress I have for each boys.   This is important to be current because APRIL 23rd will be the last day you can submit for the bear badge.   After that day, your son will not be eligible to receive the bear badge and will begin his path towards the Webelos rank.

Below are all the items we worked on as a a den.   If you have a section to make up, feel free to pick a different Achievement in the game category (God, Country, Family, Self).

  • Our Skits for Monday's pack meeting

Here is a soft copy of the skits we are doing on Monday night.

Would like the boys to look over both and be familiar with them.  I will divide the boys into a group for them to perform one of the skits at our pack meeting.

    #1  Camp Coffee

    4 scouts

1 large can full of water

    4 coffee mugs

Place the can in the center of the stage.

Scout 1: (walks to can with his cup, dips it in and takes a drink) 'Yuch! This Camp Tea is awful!'

Scout 2: (walks to can with his cup, dips it in and takes a drink) 'Yuch! This Camp Coffee is terrible!'

Scout 3: (walks to can with his cup, dips it in and takes a drink) 'Yuch! This Camp Chocolate is disgusting!'

Scout 4: (walks to can, reaches in and pulls out pair of socks. Wrings them and says...) 'Aaah, they're finally clean!'

    #2 Invisible Bench

    Required: 4 to 8 scouts

Scout #1 walks onstage and squats down as if he is sitting on a bench that is invisible.

Scout #2 walks up to #1. Scout #2: Says “Whatcha doin'? “

Scout #1: “Just sitting on this invisible bench. “

    Scout #2: “Can I join you? “

    Scout #1: “Sure.”

Scout #2 sits down next to #1.

    Scout #3 repeats the dialog.

Each scout comes on and repeats, making a long line of scouts sitting on the bench.

Last scout walks up to line of scouts. Last Scout : “What are you guys doing?”

Everyone: “Just sitting here on this invisible bench. “

last Scout : “No you aren't. I moved the bench over there. “(points)

All the sitting scouts fall down.

  • Bear Progress Update

    Hi Everyone,

Here is a status report of our current plan for achieving the Bear rank for the boys.  There are 2 topics.  1. Bear Rank.  2. Calendar.  Also, there is a list of action items I need from the families at the end of the posting.

    1. Bear Rank (Badge)

As a plan, we are one Achievement away from the Bear rank.   If your son attended every den meeting and completed the homework, including Achievements 1 and 10, they will complete the Bear rank after our Achievement 5 meeting in April.     I will be emailing your son’s progress report.   Please let me know if you have any updates on incomplete items.

This is the list of all the Achievements your son needs completed for the Bear Rank.  Achievement 5 is the only one we have not offered in den meetings.

    Section 1 - God

       - Do either Achievement 1 or 2 at home

    Section 2 - Country (3)

-Bear Achievement 3 – What Makes America Special?

-Bear Achievement 4 – Tall Tales

-Bear Achievement 5 – Sharing Your World with Wildlife (4-11-15)

    Section 3 - Family (4)

       -Bear Achievement 9 – What's Cooking

-Bear Achievement 10 – Family Fun @ HOME

-Bear Achievement 11 – Be Ready

-Bear Achievement 13 – Saving Well, Spending Well

    Section 4 - Self (4)

-Bear Achievement 14 – Ride Right

-Bear Achievement 16 – Building Muscles

-Bear Achievement 19 – Shavings and Chips

-Bear Achievement 22 – Tying It All Up

    2. Our Calendar

I had to move out the Salato meeting to April 11th because of the change to the District Pinewood Derby.  It conflicted with the original date in March.   Below is the current calendar.

Monday we will be working on a project in the den meeting and learning a skit for our Pack meeting on the 23rd.

    16th - 20 – Sawdust and Nails (Lubbe) - Tools

    23rd - Pack Meeting

30th - Spring Break (No meetings)

6th - Den Meeting (Model Rockets)

11th -Salato Wildlife Center (Achievement 5)

    13th - Planning Meeting

    20th - Den Meeting (ideas)

    27th - Pack Meeting

    1. Look over the email with your sons progress towards the bear rank.  Let me know what updates you have, and bring any questions to Monday’s meeting.

    2. Consider a position to help our sons and the pack.   Everyone in the pack is a volunteer.  The more parents engaged, the more activities we can do, and the more we can distribute the work needed to make our pack great.   There are positions from Assistant Cub Master, Committee Members, Den Leaders, to event coordinators like pinewood derby, blue & gold, and more.

I am happy to talk with you and how you can help our pack continue it success.

    See you Monday.

  • Pack Meeting Jan 26th
    Hello everyone,

A quick reminder we have our Pack meeting tomorrow night (Jan 26th) at the Church.

Our theme this meeting is "Positive Attitude" and the boys will have the opportunity to fill out a card at our Gathering.  They will be asked to share a challenge they have had and explain how they beat that challenge.

It would be helpful if you could share this with your boy(s) so they have an opportunity to think of their challenge before the meeting.

Looking forward to a fun night.

  • Pack update for 12/8

Below is the pack level posting about 12/8 Leader / planning meeting.   It is for adults to coordinate for the next month's activities.   If you have not attended one of the meetings, I encourage you to attend.   Your input and help will make the pack stronger.

Next Monday, 12/15, is our holiday Pack meeting.  The main part of the meeting is an opportunity for kids (boys and siblings) to make a gingerbread house.  It is a lot of fun, and one of the most talked about pack meetings we have.

To pull off such a big event, we need adults to help us pre assemble the houses on the Sunday before (12/14) at 5:30.   Please let me know if you are able to assist.   We teach everything needed to make the houses.

Reminder:  Tonight is a LEADERS/ADULTS only meeting!  We always welcome parent input, so please join us!

Request:  We are in need of several adults (also middle & high school students) to help pre-assmemble gingerbread houses for our December pack meeting.  If you have an hour you can spare on Sunday, December 14th at 5:30 pm, please come to Providence Christian Church.  Many hands make light the work.
